 Justine Markovitz

Senior Partner in Withers' Private Client and Tax Team

Justine Markovitz is based in Geneva and is a senior partner in Withers' Private Client and Tax team.  She co-headed the firm's global Private Client and Tax team from 2016-19 and until the end of June 2025, when her fixed term came to an end, Justine was the firm's global Chairperson.  Justine currently heads the Withers Swiss Practice and also heads up the firm's Community, Planet and Impact initiatives.

Justine joined Withers in 1999, becoming a partner in 2004. She moved to Geneva to found the Withers Swiss practice in 2005 and has led it since that date.

Justine advises global families, their family offices and their trustees on generational transition and family governance.   She works with families on international tax and estate planning matters to implement their long-term plans for their personal assets and business interests.  Many of Justine's clients are – or were – former non-doms resident in the UK.  Justine is also closely involved with many of her clients' philanthropic endeavours, both in an advisory capacity and as a board member for their charitable organisations.

DESCRIPTION

Justine Markovitz will discuss the effects on UHNW family members and the investments of such families due to the changes to UK taxation in the past five years or so as well as the changing immigration landscape and difficulty in obtaining visas for HNW family members.  Apart from departures from the UK and the destinations of family members, she will also look at future possibilities for family members to spend a few years in the UK, in particular where family trusts are already in place.  Justine will furthermore touch on the wider effects on parts of the UK economy, for instance regarding private schools (VAT and departures), investments (dis-investments) in property (tax and anti-landlord legislation coupled with the failure of the courts to work more efficiently), and longer term effects of having fewer foreign students, family members and professionals resident in the UK.
