BUSINESS AND HUMAN RIGHTS: TIPS ON HOW TO NAVIGATE THIS EMERGING AREA OF LAW
SPEAKER

Mrs. Clàudia Baró Huelmo - Associate, Dispute Resolution at Withers LLP.

DESCRIPTION

States have long had a duty to protect human rights within their jurisdiction. However, over the past several years, the focus has expanded to business enterprises, including:

  • a growing body of national laws around the world addressing many facets of human rights impacts of business, including international standards such as the United Nations Guiding Principles, and reporting requirements at the operations level and in supply chains;
  • the need for sophisticated due diligence to identify risks to meet regulatory requirements and voluntary corporate commitments;
  • an increase in judicial consideration of human rights protections; and
  • investor-driven action on human rights matters.

The presentation will seek to provide attendees with an overview of the emerging area of business and human rights, with a focus on the relevant issues for the decision-making process of trustees
